Thanks for attending my session at TMW 2017! Just click on any of the following links to download or access a resource we mentioned.
Presentation materials
- Establishing an Internet Presence: PDF
- about.me (Here’s my personal about.me page)
- strikingly.com
- WordPress.com
- Blogger
- Tumblr
- Weebly
- Wix
- Squarespace (has free trial but no free options)
To implement a WordPress blog or site on your own hosting space, you’ll want to use WordPress.org.
Registering domains
The above platforms will give you options to register the domain name you want – for example johndoewriter.com instead of johndoewriter.wordpress.com. But, if you want to register your domain independently of a platform or hosting company, I like directnic.com. There are many companies that provide registration.
Other good tools
Pixabay for free high-quality images (donations accepted)
Canva to design graphics suitable for social media sharing, print flyers, and more. Much of it’s free, with small-fee options also available.
BONUS! We didn’t get to talk about most of these in the session, but here are some social media tools I like. (Please note, some of these are for organizations or folks who are managing multiple social accounts).
- Bit.ly
- Buffer.com
- HootSuite.com
- MavSocial.com
- SocialOomph.com
- SocialPilot.co
- SproutSocial.com (no free option)
- Canva.com
- Ripl.com
- Google Alerts
- GetPocket.com
- Kanbanflow.com
- MailChimp.com – because we all need an email list, right?
If you’re serious about social media, it’s a lot more manageable if you have a calendar and plan ahead. Here’s an example:
- Sample yearly editorial calendar (Excel file) – You can also find some nice ones by Googling and downloading from some marketing sites who may ask to add you to their email list
- If you’re not ready to commit to a blog by yourself, consider blogging as part of a group. TMW member Christy French does that over at Dames of Dialogue, for example.
- Bob Cumming of Iris Press recommends author/blogging coach Molly Greene’s site: http://molly-greene.com/
